Phil Stain, Course Manager at Hollinwell.

“Over thirty-five years ago I started out as a trainee greenkeeper at Hollinwell at a time when Jim Arthur was our advisor. Guided by the basic principles he instilled into me, and the support of the golf club, I was able to achieve my ambition and ultimately became Course Manager.

Several years ago, like many other clubs, Hollinwell was under pressure because of the perceived need for faster and more receptive greens. At this point the club chose to employ the services of fine grass consultant and good friend of Jim Arthur, Gordon Irvine. Gordon was able to pick up where Jim had left off and re-focus the club on fine grasses and sustainability – the two going hand in hand.

As one of few remaining true heathland courses Hollinwell is now well on its way back to being a course where fine grasses dominate, the use of fertilisers and water are minimal, and the Jim Arthur conservation greenkeeping promotes the running game with firm surfaces.”
