Portmarnock’s Gary Johnstone on Jim Arthur

Gary Johnstone, Links manager, Portmarnock Golf Club.
“I had the pleasure of working with Jim Arthur in the past and he gave me a great insight on how to produce fine-grass playing surfaces. Jim Arthur’s book Practical Greenkeeping is the first step for any greenkeeper to obtain a better understanding of how to produce firm, fine, fescue-based playing surfaces.”
Gary Johnstone had the good fortune to work at Carnoustie under John Philip MBE and was in charge of the Burnside course. He moved a year after the British Amateur was held at Carnoustie in 1992 to manage Southerndown in South Wales and then took up the opportunity in 2007 to be Links Manager at Portmarnock Golf Club, in Dublin, which many consider to be the finest running-golf course in the Irish Republic.
