FineGolf  was happy to publish Steven Reid’s request for your  vote  that helped him win The Times Sports Book of the Year. It has been reviewed HERE

Hi Lorne,

The Society is delighted to advise you that “Bobby’s Open : Mr Jones and the Golf Shot that defined a Legend” by long time BGCS member Steven Reid was voted The Times Sports Book of the Year. This is a considerable achievement in that since the award’s inception no golf book has been voted overall winner.

There were nine category winners chosen by expert judging panels for Cricket, Football, Horse Racing, Rugby, Motor Sports etc. and then the public voted on line to choose from the nine short listed books.

Steven’s book achieved the notable feat of obtaining nearly fifty per cent of the total votes.

Steven has asked me to thank all those members who voted for his book and tells me that it is published today by Icon Books in paperback.

Kind Regards

Dick Durran

At the British Book Awards ceremony at Lord’s Cricket Club the surprise winner of the Golf Category was Bobby’s Open which tells the fascinating story of how the American amateur Bobby Jones won the Open in 1926 at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s.

There were eight other categories and there is now the voting for the Overall Book of the Year which is by online voting. You don’t have to have read the book and you don’t even need to be interested in golf or sport – which some would suggest makes it a little unreal. Anyway I don’t make the rules!

There has never been an Overall Winner from the golf category and there is a faint chance that with lots of goodwill and your vote this might be possible this year.

Some thoughts that might warrant voting for this book – it is a book that falls into a new genre, that of Openography telling the story of one Championship. Bobby Jones is still viewed by many as the greatest golfer of all time and this book seems to keep him in everyone’s awareness. Although he has been the subject of many books in the past, there are several discoveries about him in the book which have remained unknown until now. For a book about an amateur golfer to be written by an amateur author has a certain symmetry.

For Bobby’s Open to have any chance, every vote is going to be precious. The other candidates have large publishing houses behind them. Being an optimist I hope that not only will you vote but that you will forward this e mail to all your many friends, who will not only also vote but also that they will encourage their friends. I do hope this can happen.

Can I ask you to click on this link and vote for Bobby’s Open by Steven Reid. Closing date is 7 June 2013.

Thank you in advance

Steven Reid
